The Aloreña Olive of Malaga, the first in the country with designation of origin

Yesterday was presented the Regulatory Council of this protected Denomination of origin that includes 19 municipalities of the province of Malaga.

The province of Malaga has a new protected designation of origin, the Aloreña Olive of Malaga, a recognition that is given for the first time in Spain to an olive for the table.

The Regulatory Council of this Olive includes 19 municipalities of Malaga (Alhaurín de la Torre, Alhaurín el Grande, Almogía, Álora, Alozaina, Ardales, El Burgo, Carratraca, Cartama, Casarabonela, Coín, Guaro, Malaga, Monda, Pizarra, Ronda, Tolox, Valle de Abdalajís and Yunquera) and that accommodates a large group of representatives related to the sector such as farmers, processors, consumers, researchers and so on.

The Aloreña Olive of Malaga is one of the typical products of relevance within the food industry of Malaga. The flavouring of this type of olive is typical of its zone of production, and is based on an old recipe and of course, the products are always natural that make the Aloreña traditional, distinctive and differentiated from the rest of the table olives.

The Denomination of Origin for the Aloreña Olives of Malaga recognizes three differentiated products according to their degree of fermentation and bitterness:

• Olives aloreñas of Malaga fresh green: These are olives, after collection; go directly to cylinders that are placed in cool or cold rooms staying with a light green colour.

• Olives aloreñas of Malaga traditional: They are olives that after the process of receiving, sorting and parting, are placed in canisters that are deposited in premises without air conditioning.

• Olives aloreñas of Malaga cured: This type of olives, once received and washed, are placed in fermenters where they undergo a process of curing of at least ninety days before packaging.

At the presentation, which was chaired by Antonio Moreno Ferrer, the provincial delegate of Agriculture and Fisheries; Maria Gamez, delegate of the Government in Malaga; Matthew Bellido, President of the Control Board of OJ Aloreña of Malaga; Antonia Bravo, the Treasurer of the Association of dressers of the olive of Malaga; Jose Sanchez Moreno, president of the GDR Guadalhorce Valley, and Jose Luis Sanchez Teruel, Director-General for Sustainable Development and Rural Affairs; industry representatives came together with other representatives of related institutions setting up the denomination such as the Provincial Council of Malaga, the University or the Institute for Fat CSIC.

Sanchez Moreno has emphasized the great job that, from the sector itself to the various institutions related to the sector, has been done for almost ten years to achieve this distinctive quality for Aloreña of Malaga.
